Featured Programs

African Sky is a social profit organization working to lessen the effects of extreme poverty in Mali. Our "high impact, low cost" projects are organized into four programs: education, food security, community health, and community arts.

Education
African Sky promotes literacy and universal access to primary education in rural Mali. We operate three adult literacy programs (Dissan, Zeala, and Markala) that teach reading, writing, and basic math. African Sky also partners with small communities and villages to help them build schools. Our "10 Schools, 1000 Lives" campaign features special compressed earth blocks (CEBs) that maximize local contributions and resources, while minimizing costs.

Food Security
African Sky assists farmers, community organizations, and others working to bolster local food production despite challenges such as low and erratic rainfall. Our most enduring food security project is the creation of community cereal banks. Through cereal banks, farming families can avoid the volatile local cereal market; grain prices typically double during the annual, pre-harvest "hungry" season. Also, at the discretion of, and upon request by community elders and leaders, African Sky provides modest emergency assistance to farm families facing critical breakdowns in household food production.

Community Health
African Sky supports community-based initiatives that confront critical health issues that undermine local food production, socioeconomic security, and ecological sustainability. We focus on issues that impact a broad segment of rural farm communities, such as malaria and access to clean drinking water. Currently we help support The Dokotoro Project, which is translating into Bamanakan, a Mali version of the book "Where There Is No Doctor" (a medical encyclopedia that can be used like WebMD, but it includes specific treatment procedures).

Community Arts
African Sky supports innovation in and preservation of traditional Malian music, drumming, performance, arts, and trade knowledge. We also support community groups and activities that promote social cohesion and community development. Over the years we have partnered with and provided operational support for various groups including tailors, youth soccer teams, community radio, and women's small-enterprise collectives.

Little Eagles Football League
In an effort to continue African Sky's mission to build friendships between the US and Malian communities, "Les Petits Aigles Ligue du Football" (The Little Eagles Football League) aims to promote learning outside the classroom through a youth soccer league that would include, at its core, education and sports programming for boys and girls in the community.

The African Sky Kenya Project
African Sky Kenya aims to have a long-lasting, positive impact in the communities in which we will work. We hope to expand our Kajulu Schools program to include the construction of separate girl's and boy's bathrooms, the provision of sanitary napkins for girls that have reached puberty, and the creation of a school garden to supplement our school lunch program. We also hope to support or construct a Women's Center where vocational skills can be learned and shared. Most importantly, we look forward to building friendships through which we will create new solutions to fulfill the potential of Kenyans. Click here to learn more about African Sky Kenya!
